Title: A new lab on Applied Ontology
Dear all,
I have
the pleasure to announce the new Laboratory for Applied Ontology,
resulting from the fusion of the two ontology groups at the former
LADSEBCNR (Padua) and the former ITBMCNR (Rome). Due to a major
restructuring process within National Research Council (CNR), these
two groups are now affiliated with the Istituto di Scienze e
Tecnologie della Cognizione ISTCCNR. The main location will be
in Trento, under the auspices of a project involving both the local
government (Provincia di Trento) and ITC-IRST, with a group also
working in Roma.
The lab
performs basic and applied research on the ontological foundations of
conceptual modeling, exploring the role of ontologies in different
fields, such as: knowledge representation, knowledge engineering,
database design, information retrieval, natural language processing,
and the semantic web. The group is characterized by a strong
interdisciplinary approach that combines Computer Science, Philosophy
and Linguistics, and relies on logic as a unifying paradigm. On the
application side, main emphasis is given on the use of ontologies for
electronic commerce, medical information systems, enterprise modeling,
integration of lexical resources, and information access to the
Web.

are still working, but they will be discontinued soon.
As a
first scientific event, we have organized a seminar on the Ontology of
Social Interaction, which includes a cycle of lectures by Barry Smith
on the Ontology of Law, Economics and Human Interaction (see
http://ontology.ip.rm.cnr.it/Events.html).
